India has officially submitted an expression of interest to host the 2038 Asian Games, entering the race alongside South Korea and Mongolia. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) confirmed the move on Wednesday, marking a significant step in the country's ambition to stage the multi-sport event for the first time since 1982.
Competing Bids
South Korea has proposed Busan as its potential host city, while Mongolia is considering Ulaanbaatar. India has yet to finalize a specific city but is evaluating options including New Delhi, Ahmedabad, and Mumbai. The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) will evaluate the bids and make a final decision, likely in 2026.
India's Previous Hosting Experience
India last hosted the Asian Games in 1982 in New Delhi. Since then, the country has successfully organized major events like the 2010 Commonwealth Games and the 2023 Cricket World Cup, showcasing its capability to host large-scale sporting events.
IOA President Dr. PT Usha expressed optimism, stating, "Hosting the Asian Games will boost India's sports infrastructure and inspire a new generation of athletes." The government has also pledged support, with sports minister Anurag Thakur calling it a "golden opportunity" for the nation.
The 2038 Games will feature 40 sports, with potential inclusions like esports and cricket, which are popular in Asia. The bidding process also considers legacy benefits, including urban development and tourism.
South Korea, which hosted the Games in 1986 and 2014, brings experience, while Mongolia seeks to host its first major multi-sport event. India's bid emphasizes its large market and growing sports ecosystem.
