The New York Knicks have ended a 53-year championship drought, and Karl-Anthony Towns finally has his ring. Yet, during the postgame press conference on Saturday night, the trophy beside him was not his primary focus. Instead, he spoke about the woman who held him together during his darkest moments. Standing at the podium in a 2026 NBA Champions hat, his voice cracking with emotion, Towns declared that none of this would have been possible without Jordyn Woods.
How Karl-Anthony Towns and Jordyn Woods Fell in Love
Towns' mother, Jacqueline Cruz-Towns, passed away on April 13, 2020, from complications related to COVID-19 at the age of 58. It was a devastating loss that left a permanent mark. At that time, the person who provided unwavering support was not a teammate or a coach, but Jordyn Woods, who was then just a friend. "It's crazy, when she passed, there was so much turmoil in my life," Towns recalled at the press conference. "Funny enough, my fiancée was the one, who was a friend at the time, was the only person I got to call before I had to go out there and say bye to her at the hospital."
Their bond grew even stronger because Jordyn was dealing with her own grief. She had lost her father, sound engineer John Woods, in 2017 after a sudden cancer diagnosis. Two people, both deeply affected by loss, leaned on each other until their connection deepened into love. By the time the world reopened, they were in a relationship. On Christmas Eve 2025, they became engaged. And on June 13, 2026, they stood together on the championship court, with Jordyn in tears.
Jordyn shared the press conference clip on X with three emojis: "Actual tears ??❤️" She then took to Instagram, writing that she was "still overwhelmed with emotion," calling KAT her "soon-to-be husband and best friend." Celebrities like Cardi B and Teyana Taylor flooded the comments with supportive messages. After the confetti settled, Towns found her on the court, and they embraced. Jordyn, known for her wit, reportedly joked, "Two rings in one year," referring to both her engagement ring and the championship trophy.
Towns summed it up at the presser: "You always pray you're going to pick the right woman for you, and I know I did in my fiancée. Me and her have a real bond that goes deeper than just physical features and everything like that. We've got a true friendship that was built from the ground up."
While this could have been just a sports story—the Knicks win, a star player gets emotional, his fiancée cries—it is much more. It is a tale of two people who met during the worst season of their lives, chose each other, and saw their journey come full circle on the biggest stage in basketball.
