Sahaja Yamalapalli Advances to Grudge Match Against Top Seed in Pune ITF Event
In a compelling display of resilience, Sahaja Yamalapalli has secured a highly anticipated second-round clash against top seed Leolia Jeanjean of France at the $60,000 NECC ITF women's tennis tournament held at Deccan Gymkhana in Pune. This sets the stage for a revenge opportunity, as Jeanjean had previously defeated the Indian in the second round of the same event last year.
Yamalapalli Overcomes Illness and Rust to Triumph
Sahaja Yamalapalli, battling illness since her participation in the Mumbai Open WTA 125K last week, shook off initial rust to defeat Russian opponent Ekaterina Maklakova with scores of 6-4, 7-6 (6). The victory was hard-fought, showcasing her determination and tactical prowess on the court.
Reflecting on the upcoming match, the 25-year-old Hyderabadi expressed excitement and readiness. "I played her last year here. It was a tough match. I lost but it was a close match. I'm really looking forward, excited for the challenge. I just want to go out there and play my game and see if I can tactically play better than last time," Sahaja stated, highlighting her strategic focus against the 30-year-old French player from Montpellier, who was last year's runner-up.
Jeanjean's Struggle and Yamalapalli's Coaching Shift
World No. 115 Leolia Jeanjean, fresh from reaching the singles quarterfinals and doubles semifinals in Mumbai, faced difficulties adapting to the changed conditions in Pune. She required two hours and 21 minutes to overcome another Russian, Erika Andreeva, with a scoreline of 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, indicating a challenging match ahead for Yamalapalli.
On a personal front, Sahaja Yamalapalli, currently ranked World No. 425, has embarked on a new coaching partnership with Dmitriy Kuchlikov, based in Thailand. Kuchlikov, known for coaching his daughter Elizaveta Kuchlikova to singles and doubles titles at the 2015 Australian Open junior championships, is seen as a potential turning point in her career. "I haven't really found someone who I thought, like, he's the one that can take me further up in the game until recently. So that's why I've been doing a lot of changes. I want someone who can make me win tournaments, that's what I've been looking for," Sahaja explained, emphasizing her search for stability and success.
Additionally, Sahaja has joined Sania Mirza's ‘Next Set' initiative, which provides coaching support for emerging players. While she will benefit from a travelling physio through this program, she remains committed to her exclusive arrangement with Kuchlikov, aiming for consistency in her team setup.
Shrivalli Rashmikaa and Ankita Raina's Performances
In other matches, Shrivalli Rashmikaa, guided by respected coach M Balachandran, delivered a disciplined performance to swiftly defeat 18-year-old Russian southpaw Victoria Milovanova 6-3, 6-2. She now faces last week's Mumbai Open champion, Mananchaya Sawangkaew, in the next round, promising an exciting contest.
Meanwhile, Ankita Raina's spirited run in the tournament came to an end. The 33-year-old, who had advanced through two rounds of qualifying, showed initial promise but ultimately lost to Korea's Sohyun Park with scores of 3-6, 6-2, 5-7 in a marathon match lasting two hours and 32 minutes. Despite leading 5-1 in the decider and having a match-point opportunity, Ankita could not secure the win, marking a tough end to her campaign.
Looking Ahead with Optimism
Despite a challenging period that saw her ranking drop from a career-high 284 in October 2024, Sahaja Yamalapalli remains optimistic. "I'm happy at least I stayed in that level. Staying in that ranking and that level also is hard. We're always trying to get better, but sometimes you also should be grateful to where you are, because it's not easy," she remarked. With renewed focus on her coaching team, she aims to make significant strides in the upcoming matches and beyond.
The NECC ITF women's tennis event in Pune continues to showcase intense competition and promising talent, with Sahaja Yamalapalli's grudge match against Leolia Jeanjean being a highlight to watch.
