AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D2: Dual 3D V-Cache Chip Now Available

AMD's latest desktop processor is now available on shelves, marking a significant milestone as the first chip to stack 3D V-Cache on both of its chiplets. The Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition launched on April 22 at a suggested price of $899, targeting developers and creators who are tired of waiting on their machines.

Performance and Specifications

The chip runs 16 cores and 32 threads, boosts up to 5.6 GHz, and carries a 200W TDP. The headline feature is the 208MB of total cache, a direct result of AMD's decision to put second-generation 3D V-Cache stacks on both compute dies instead of just one. This means more data sits closer to the cores, resulting in fewer trips to main memory and snappier performance on tasks that eat through large datasets.

Drop-in Upgrade for AM5 Owners

Existing AM5 users can slot the 9950X3D2 into their current motherboard without needing a new board. AMD says performance gains over the previous 9950X3D average 5–8% in creator workloads like Blender and DaVinci Resolve, as well as in large-scale code builds such as Unreal Engine and Chromium.

The chip is built on TSMC's 4nm process using Zen 5 architecture, supports up to 256GB of DDR5 memory, and includes PCIe 5.0. AMD recommends pairing it with a liquid cooler given the 200W thermal envelope.

Alienware Area-51 First to Ship

On the prebuilt side, the Alienware Area-51 Desktop is the first system shipping with the 9950X3D2 installed. AMD also positioned the chip as a foundation for AI-adjacent developer work, including local inference, large simulations, and compilation pipelines that benefit heavily from low-latency cache access.

The processor is available now from major retailers.
