A recent RTI response from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has disclosed further details regarding the crash testing and safety rating procedures under Bharat NCAP in India. The RTI, filed in March 2026, sought information on retests, crash test modifiers, and the selection process for vehicles submitted for evaluation, as highlighted in a post on TeamBHP.
Key Findings from the RTI Response
According to the information shared online, Bharat NCAP had evaluated 35 car models as of March 31, 2026. All these vehicles were voluntarily provided by manufacturers. The response clarified that none of the cars tested so far were directly chosen by the Government of India, although the AIS-197 regulations permit the government to nominate vehicles for testing.
Retests and Reassessments
The RTI response also disclosed that seven vehicles underwent retesting or reassessment before their final ratings were published on the Bharat NCAP website. These include the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Tata Punch ICE, Tata Sierra ICE, Tata Curvv ICE, Mahindra XUV 3XO, Mahindra XUV400 EV, and Mahindra BE 6.
According to the reply, these retests were performed under Clause 6.2 of AIS-197. This clause permits retesting or reassessment in cases of incomplete data, missing parameters, or results falling outside required limits. Retesting is not unique to Bharat NCAP; similar safety programs worldwide conduct reassessments to ensure accurate results and verify improvements before final ratings are announced.
