Thiruvananthapuram: BSNL Kerala has successfully deployed 6,979 indigenous 4G sites across the state, comprising mobile towers and base stations, to deliver high-speed data and enhanced indoor voice call coverage. This rollout, which can be upgraded to 5G in the future, represents a significant step toward self-reliant telecommunications, ensuring high-speed data and crystal-clear voice services are accessible throughout Kerala, according to a BSNL Kerala statement.
Connecting Remote Areas
Of the total 4G sites, 322 have been strategically installed in tribal settlements, hilly regions, and underserved border areas that were previously isolated from the digital map. These sites now fully integrate these communities into the mainstream digital economy, the statement added. This initiative addresses the connectivity gap in some of the state's most challenging geographies.
Indigenous Technology Stack
Unlike earlier generations of network technology, the 4G network is built entirely on an indigenous technology stack developed in collaboration with home-grown pioneers such as C-DOT and the TCS-led consortium. This approach not only enhances national security but also fosters local innovation and reduces dependency on foreign technology.

Saji Kumar R, Chief General Manager of the Kerala telecom circle, emphasized the broader impact of this achievement. "This milestone is more than just a technical upgrade; it is a commitment to every citizen," he said. "With 6,979 sites now active, including 322 in the state's toughest geographies, we are ensuring that high-quality data and voice services are no longer a luxury, but a right for all." The deployment underscores BSNL's dedication to bridging the digital divide and providing equitable access to modern communication services across Kerala.
