The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is targeting completion of Phase-2 of Chennai airport's integrated terminal by December. This project forms a crucial component of the airport's ongoing expansion and modernization program. Officials have instructed the contractor to accelerate construction to meet the deadline.
Workforce Boost to Accelerate Construction
To expedite construction, the workforce at the project site has been increased from 900 to 1,200 workers. Airport director M Raja Kishore stated that discussions are underway to further raise the number to 1,800. This step is intended to ensure timely completion of the terminal.
Project Under Close Monitoring
AAI completed the first phase of the integrated terminal in 2023. However, delays in the second phase have prompted closer scrutiny by senior officials from New Delhi. The project remains a top priority for airport authorities.
Rs 2,467-Crore Upgrade in Progress
The expansion and modernization work at Chennai airport is being carried out at a cost of Rs 2,467 crore. According to airport officials, approximately 45% of construction work has been completed so far. Efforts are underway to maintain momentum and adhere to the schedule.
Rising Costs Pose Challenge
Officials noted that the increase in raw material costs due to the ongoing West Asian crisis has emerged as a challenge for the project. Regular meetings are being held with contractors to prevent budget overruns. Authorities stated that material and manpower are being used optimally to keep costs under control.
Passenger Capacity Set to Rise
Once the integrated terminal becomes operational, Chennai airport's annual passenger handling capacity will increase from 30 million to 35 million. The facility will cater to both domestic and international flight operations. The expansion is expected to enhance the overall travel experience.
Enhanced Facilities for Travelers
The new terminal will feature additional check-in counters, immigration counters, and baggage belts. It will also include automatic tray return systems at security checkpoints. Additional aerobridges will be installed to accommodate both smaller and larger aircraft.
Terminal Planned Across Four Levels
The integrated terminal is being developed across four levels. The basement will handle baggage operations, while the ground floor will house the arrivals section. A mezzanine level and a dedicated departures terminal will complete the structure, creating a more efficient passenger flow system.
