Discord Expands Age Verification Globally, Locking Unverified Users from Adult Content
Discord Global Age Verification Locks Unverified Users from 18+ Content

Discord Implements Worldwide Age Verification System

Discord is rolling out comprehensive age verification measures on a global scale. Beginning in early March, all users who have not completed age verification will be automatically restricted from accessing servers marked as 18+, age-restricted channels, and any sensitive content across the entire platform. This significant policy expansion follows successful testing in the United Kingdom and Australia last year, where local regulatory requirements initially prompted the company to introduce these age-check mechanisms.

Expanded Restrictions for Unverified Accounts

The limitations for unverified users extend beyond just adult-oriented content. Affected accounts will also face restrictions on participating in Discord's Stage channels, which function as livestream-style discussion forums. Additionally, these users will encounter enhanced content filters that automatically block graphic material. Direct messages from unfamiliar users will be redirected to a separate inbox for review, and friend requests from unknown accounts will trigger explicit warning prompts before acceptance.

Three Verification Methods Available

To remove these restrictions and regain full platform access, Discord offers users three distinct verification pathways:

  1. AI-Powered Facial Age Estimation: This is the fastest option, utilizing artificial intelligence to analyze a video selfie captured entirely on the user's device. Discord emphasizes that this biometric data never leaves the user's phone, addressing privacy concerns.
  2. Government ID Submission: Users can submit official identification documents through a third-party verification vendor. Discord states that these documents are processed and deleted almost immediately after age confirmation.
  3. Passive Behavior Analysis: Discord is deploying an "age inference model" that discreetly evaluates account activity patterns. This system analyzes factors including the games users play, their typical activity schedules, and indicators of professional working hours to estimate whether the account holder is an adult without requiring manual intervention.

Platform Impact and Privacy Considerations

Savannah Badalich, Discord's Global Head of Product Policy, explained to The Verge that most regular users will experience minimal disruption since these changes primarily target explicitly adult content. However, the company acknowledges that some user attrition is inevitable and has incorporated this expectation into their strategic planning. Privacy remains a critical consideration, particularly given that one of Discord's former verification partners experienced a data breach in October that exposed user identification information, highlighting the tangible risks associated with digital verification systems.
