The process to select a new vice-chancellor (VC) for Goa University has commenced as the current VC, Harilal Menon, completes his five-year term in September 2025. The office of the chancellor, Goa Governor Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju, has constituted a search-cum-selection committee to recommend suitable candidates for the post.
Search Committee Invites Applications
The search-cum-selection committee has called for applications from distinguished academicians who meet the qualifications prescribed under the Goa University Statute SA-6(1)(b)(i). According to the statute, a candidate must possess the highest level of competence, integrity, morals, and institutional commitment. The appointee should be a distinguished academician with a minimum of ten years of experience as a professor in a university or ten years in a reputed research or academic administrative organization, demonstrating academic leadership.
Applications are invited until May 25, 2025. After the deadline, the committee will shortlist candidates and call them for personal interactions.
Background of Current VC
Harilal Menon was appointed as VC on September 4, 2021. He served as the dean of the School of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences at Goa University and became the first full-time academic from within the university to hold the VC position.
During the previous selection process, after former VC Varun Sahni's term ended, over 250 individuals applied for the post. From these, 23 academicians were shortlisted for final interviews, leading to Menon's selection. Among the applicants were several serving professors from IITs, a former director of the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER), and a senior Goa University professor.
