Indonesia Implements Social Media Ban for Minors Under 16 to Combat Online Dangers

Indonesia is set to initiate restrictions on social media access for children under the age of 16, effective from March 28. This policy positions Indonesia alongside a growing global trend of governments enacting regulations to shield minors from online hazards such as cyberbullying, fraud, and excessive usage.

Government Announces Gradual Deactivation of Accounts on High-Risk Platforms

According to a Reuters report, Indonesia's Communications and Digital Minister, Meutya Hafid, stated in a video announcement that the government will "delay access" to social media accounts for users under 16 through a ministerial regulation issued this week. The plan involves gradually deactivating accounts on "high-risk platforms," including TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and Roblox, for this age group.

Minister Acknowledges Initial Challenges for Families

Minister Meutya explained that the process will be implemented step by step until all platforms comply with their obligations, though specific compliance steps were not detailed. She recognized that the transition might initially cause discomfort, noting, "We realize this may cause discomfort in the beginning. Children may complain and parents may be confused dealing with their complaints."

Policy Aims to Address Multiple Online Risks for Minors

The minister emphasized that the policy is designed to tackle the various risks minors encounter online. "Our children are facing risks, from porn, cyberbullying, online fraud to most importantly, addiction," she added. However, the Indonesian ministry has not yet released the full details of the new regulation, as reported by Reuters.

Indonesia Joins Global Efforts with Similar Restrictions

Indonesia is now part of a cohort of countries like Australia and Spain that have recently introduced social media access restrictions for minors. Additionally, neighboring Malaysia has announced plans to enforce a similar ban for users under 16 starting in 2026, highlighting a regional shift towards enhanced digital safety measures.

Internet Penetration and Usage Among Indonesian Youth

A survey conducted by the Indonesian Internet Service Providers' Association, involving 8,700 participants, revealed that internet penetration in Indonesia reached 79.5% in 2024. The country, with a population of approximately 280 million, shows significant digital engagement among its youth.

The survey found that 48% of children under 12 have internet access, with some in this group actively using platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. Furthermore, internet penetration among "Gen Z" users aged 12 to 27 stands at 87%, underscoring the widespread use of online services among younger demographics.
