The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) has officially announced the Round 1 seat allotment results for JoSAA Counselling 2026. Candidates who have been assigned seats must complete the seat acceptance process, which includes fee payment and document verification, within the stipulated deadline. Students can check their allotment status on the official JoSAA website. The final date to complete the seat acceptance process for Round 1 is June 26, 2026.
What is JoSAA Counselling?
JoSAA manages the centralized admission process for undergraduate engineering programs at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and other Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs). Admissions are based on ranks obtained in JEE Main and JEE Advanced. The counselling process includes registration, choice filling, mock allotment, seat allotment, document verification, and fee payment.
Freeze Option
Candidates who select the "Freeze" option accept their allotted seat and will not participate in further counselling rounds. Once frozen, the seat is final, and no upgrades are possible.
Float Option
The "Float" option allows candidates to accept the allotted seat while remaining eligible for a better preferred course or institute in subsequent rounds. If a higher preference becomes available, the candidate may receive an upgraded seat.
Slide Option
Candidates choosing the "Slide" option accept the allotted institute but wish to be considered for a better branch within the same institute. They will not be considered for other institutes in future rounds.
Opening Rank and Closing Rank
After each counselling round, JoSAA releases opening and closing ranks for each course and institute. The opening rank is the rank at which admissions begin for a program, while the closing rank is the last rank at which admission is offered. These ranks help candidates estimate their chances in future rounds.
Mock Allotment
Before final seat allotment, JoSAA conducts mock allotments based on candidates' choices. This provides an idea of possible seat allocation and allows candidates to modify preferences before the final process.
Seat Acceptance Fee
Candidates allotted a seat must pay the seat acceptance fee and upload required documents within the deadline. Failure to do so may result in cancellation of the allotted seat.
Choice Locking
Candidates must save and lock their preferred institute and program choices before the specified deadline. Once locked, modifications are generally not allowed, so careful review is essential.
What Candidates Should Do Next
Candidates allotted seats in Round 1 should carefully review their options and choose Freeze, Float, or Slide based on their preferences. They must also complete document verification and fee payment on time to avoid losing their allotted seats. Understanding these key counselling terms can help candidates make informed decisions and improve their chances of securing their preferred engineering program.
