A 32-year-old man was defrauded of Rs 70,000 after he clicked on a malicious, obscene link on a social media platform via his mobile phone, according to police reports.
Incident Details
The victim came across a Facebook page displaying obscene photographs of women. Upon clicking one of the images, his mobile phone reportedly began to overheat and was subsequently compromised by hackers, police said.
Shortly after, a series of unauthorized online transactions were initiated. The victim then received a bank notification alerting him of a Rs 70,000 debit from his account.
Complaint and Investigation
Realizing the fraud, the man lodged an online complaint through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal and later approached the police, as reported by news agency PTI.
The Sakinaka Police have registered a case against an unidentified individual for cheating under the Information Technology (IT) Act. An investigation has been launched, police informed.
Preventive Measures
Authorities advise citizens to avoid clicking on suspicious links and to immediately report any unauthorized transactions to their bank and cyber crime portals.
