Indie multiplayer game Meccha Chameleon has crossed 1 million copies sold within four days of its launch. The game’s developer, lemorion_1224, took to the PC game distribution platform Steam to make a brief announcement about it. Confirming the milestone in a community blog post, the developer wrote: "Thank you so much for playing!"
The game, which launched on Steam for under $5, is a multiplayer hide-and-seek title in which players blend into their surroundings by changing their characters' colours rather than transforming into objects. Its rapid sales growth comes amid increasing interest in low-cost, multiplayer-focused indie games that have gained traction through streaming platforms and online content creators.
Meccha Chameleon has public matches and streaming, and the game’s Steam page encourages streamers to add the game’s name to livestream titles. The title has also garnered an audience on YouTube and other livestreaming platforms, with creators displaying gameplay and hiding strategies.
How the Meccha Chameleon Game Works
In this game, players begin as a plain white character and use a colour wheel to match the surrounding environment. The game divides players into two teams: seekers and hiders. The objective for hiders is to remain concealed until the timer expires, while seekers must find all hidden players before time runs out. Unlike traditional prop-hunt games where players disguise themselves as objects, Meccha Chameleon relies on colour matching and environmental camouflage.
Gameplay footage shared by the developer shows players blending into walls, shadows, signs, and other elements of the map by carefully adjusting their appearance to match nearby colours.
The game's early success places it among a growing number of independent multiplayer titles that have attracted large audiences shortly after launch. While Meccha Chameleon shares some similarities with social multiplayer games that rely on group play and online lobbies, it is structured primarily as a competitive player-versus-player party game.
Its combination of simple mechanics, short matches, and streamer-friendly gameplay appears to have contributed to its visibility within the gaming community.
For now, Meccha Chameleon remains available exclusively on Steam, where it continues to attract new players following its first-week sales milestone.
