Mumbai Local Trains: More 15-Coach, AC Services From May 1

Mumbai: Suburban commuters in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) will experience enhanced travel comfort and capacity from May 1, as Western Railway (WR) and Central Railway (CR) roll out additional 15-coach trains and expand air-conditioned services.

Central Railway Expands AC Services

Central Railway will increase its AC suburban operations to 108 daily services from May 1, adding 14 more trips on the Harbour line. This expansion pushes CR's AC network past the 100-service milestone, offering more commuters a cooler and more comfortable journey.

Western Railway Adds Longer Trains

Western Railway will convert 17 existing 12-coach non-AC locals into 15-coach services, raising the total number of 15-car trains from 227 to 244. Of these, eight longer trains will operate on the Virar–Dahanu Road section, addressing rising demand on that route. The move aims to ease overcrowding without increasing the total number of services.

However, due to operational constraints, 15-coach trains will not halt at Grant Road, Charni Road, and Marine Lines stations in both directions. Instead, they will have a double halt at Dadar on platform number 4 to manage passenger flow efficiently.

More AC Local Services

WR will also introduce 12 additional AC local services by replacing existing non-AC trains. This will further enhance commuter comfort on the suburban network.

The initiatives are part of ongoing efforts to improve suburban rail travel in Mumbai, one of the busiest commuter rail systems in the world. With these changes, passengers can expect less crowding and more options for air-conditioned travel.
