OpenAI Rolls Out Personal Finance Feature in ChatGPT for Pro Users
OpenAI Adds Personal Finance Tool to ChatGPT for Pro Users

OpenAI has introduced a new personal finance feature within ChatGPT, enabling users to connect their bank accounts, credit cards, and investment accounts directly to the AI assistant. This tool helps users analyze their financial situation by providing insights into spending, investments, subscriptions, and upcoming payments. Currently, the feature is available exclusively to Pro users in the United States who pay $200 per month. Plus users will gain access later, and OpenAI has stated that it will eventually be rolled out to all users.

How It Works and What You Can Ask

Once an account is connected, ChatGPT presents a dashboard that consolidates financial data, including spending patterns, investment performance, active subscriptions, and upcoming bills. The feature integrates with over 12,000 financial institutions through Plaid, such as Chase, Schwab, Fidelity, Robinhood, American Express, and Capital One. Users can then ask questions they might typically avoid, such as whether they are spending more than usual, if they can afford a house in five years, or which forgotten subscriptions are still active. The conversations run on GPT-5.5 Thinking by default, OpenAI's advanced reasoning model. Pro users also have access to GPT-5.5 Pro, which is designed to handle more complex financial queries. To begin, users can open Finances from the sidebar or type "@Finances, connect my accounts" in any chat.

Data Privacy and Control

ChatGPT can read balances, transactions, investments, and liabilities but cannot move money or view full account numbers. Users can disconnect any account at any time, and synced data is deleted within 30 days. Additionally, users can delete "financial memories"—context ChatGPT retains, such as mortgage details or personal debts, to personalize future responses. Temporary chats do not access account information. This feature follows OpenAI's acquisition of personal finance startup Hiro last month, whose team contributed to its development, though the purchase price remains undisclosed. Support for Intuit is expected next, which will bring tax estimates on stock sales and credit card approval odds within ChatGPT.
