Patna: In a first, the 117-year-old Patna Law College — the sixth oldest institution of legal studies in India — is set to introduce biometric attendance for students from July 1 with the start of the new academic session.
College principal Yogendra Kumar Verma said the biometric system is already in use for teaching and non-teaching staff and will now be extended to students. Necessary arrangements for its smooth implementation have been completed.
The move aims to enforce discipline and improve academic engagement. Patna University, of which the college is a constituent unit, mandates at least 75% attendance for students to be eligible for university examinations.
Founded in 1909, the college has produced several legal luminaries, including former Chief Justices of India B P Sinha and L M Sharma, and India’s first Attorney General, Lal Narain Sinha.
The college has recently launched a five-year integrated BBA LLB (Honours) course with 180 seats after receiving approval from the Bar Council of India (BCI). It also continues to offer the conventional three-year LLB (Honours) course under the latest curriculum framework. The admission process for both courses is underway. The last date for submitting online applications for the three-year LLB (Honours) course (300 seats) is July 10. Admissions to the five-year BBA LLB (Honours) course (180 seats) will be through an entrance test scheduled for June 24, Verma said.
He added that the college has submitted a ₹90 crore infrastructure development proposal to the state government in view of expanding courses and rising student strength. The proposal aims to meet BCI norms and support academic needs. The college has also sought sanction for 40 additional teaching posts to ensure regular academic activities in its undergraduate and postgraduate departments.
