An IndiGo aircraft operating a domestic flight experienced smoke inside the cabin shortly after landing at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru on Wednesday, prompting an emergency evacuation of all passengers. The incident occurred around 12:30 PM when the flight, arriving from a regional destination, was taxiing to the gate.
Incident Details
According to airport officials, the crew detected smoke in the cabin and immediately alerted the cockpit. The pilot then initiated an emergency evacuation procedure, deploying slides and instructing passengers to leave the aircraft via the emergency exits. All 176 passengers and 6 crew members were safely evacuated within minutes. No injuries were reported.
Response and Investigation
The airport's fire and rescue services were promptly dispatched to the scene. After a thorough inspection, it was determined that the smoke originated from an electrical fault in the galley area. The aircraft has been grounded for further investigation by aviation authorities. IndiGo issued a statement confirming the incident and expressing regret for the inconvenience caused, emphasizing that safety remains their top priority.
Passenger Experiences
Passengers recounted moments of panic as the cabin filled with smoke. Many praised the crew for their swift action. "We saw smoke and then the crew told us to evacuate. It was scary but they handled it well," said a passenger. Another added, "The slides deployed and we were out in no time. Thankful for everyone's calm response."
Aviation Safety Concerns
This incident adds to a series of technical glitches reported in Indian aviation recently. Experts stress the need for stringent maintenance checks and proactive safety measures. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered a detailed probe into the matter.
