Walmart's ChatGPT Shopping Underperforms, New Strategy Emerges

Walmart's ChatGPT Shopping Initiative Fails to Meet Expectations

Walmart's collaboration with Sam Altman-led OpenAI to enable direct shopping through ChatGPT has not yielded strong results thus far. According to a detailed report by Wired, the feature, known as Instant Checkout, which allows users to purchase products directly within the chatbot, has generated significantly lower sales compared to conventional online shopping methods.

Low Conversion Rates Highlight Challenges

Walmart made approximately 200,000 products available for purchase inside ChatGPT through the Instant Checkout feature. However, conversion rates were markedly lower than expected. Daniel Danker, executive vice president overseeing product and design at Walmart, revealed that conversion rates for in-chat purchases were three times lower than those for purchases where users were redirected to Walmart's official website. This indicates that fewer users completed transactions when shopping directly within the ChatGPT interface.

The report noted that certain product categories performed better than others. Items such as vitamin and protein supplements were among the top sellers through the chatbot. Other active categories included automotive, beauty, home management, hardware, and tools, which collectively accounted for more than half of the orders placed via ChatGPT.

Shift to New Chatbot Integration: Introducing Sparky

In response to these underwhelming results, Walmart and OpenAI are moving away from the Instant Checkout model. Instead, Walmart plans to introduce its own chatbot, named Sparky, within the ChatGPT platform. Danker explained that the previous system created issues because it required users to complete purchases item by item, leading to concerns about receiving multiple shipments. "They fear that when checkout happens automatically after every single item that they're going to receive five boxes when they actually just want it all in one," he said.

The new system will allow users to add multiple items to a cart and complete purchases in a more standard, consolidated manner, aiming to enhance the shopping experience.

How Walmart's Sparky Chatbot Will Operate

Under the new setup, users will log into Walmart's Sparky chatbot within ChatGPT. Their shopping carts across Walmart's app, website, and chatbot will sync seamlessly. "When Sparky travels, it's the Walmart store meeting you where you are, instead of a completely broken experience," Danker stated. The chatbot is designed to assist users in searching, comparing, and buying products while maintaining a connected shopping process across various platforms.

Despite the challenges, Walmart reported that ChatGPT is attracting new customers at about twice the rate of traditional search engines. However, the company believes that fully automated AI shopping may still require more time to mature. "This idea that it will all become automated might be a little bit far-fetched," Danker commented. OpenAI also indicated plans to focus more on helping users research products while granting retailers greater control over the checkout process. These adjustments suggest that companies are continuing to refine their strategies as they experiment with AI-based shopping tools.
