WhatsApp Introduces Instagram-Inspired 'Close Friends' Feature for Enhanced Privacy
WhatsApp, the popular messaging platform owned by Meta, is reportedly testing a new feature that allows users to create custom lists for their status updates. This development, spotted in the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.5.11, includes an option similar to Instagram's 'Close Friends' list, enabling users to share updates with a select group of contacts.
How the New Custom Lists Will Work
According to reports from the WhatsApp tracker WABetaInfo, the feature lets users organize their contacts into curated lists. Each list can be customized with a name and an emoji to differentiate between groups. The primary aim is to simplify the process of managing status privacy, saving users from the hassle of adjusting share settings repeatedly.
To use the 'Close Friends' list, users can add contacts directly from the status update privacy settings or modify the list from the status interface. This flexibility ensures that users have full control over who sees their updates. However, it's important to note that changes to the list, such as adding or removing contacts, will only take effect for future status updates. This means that if a user shares a status with a specific list and later removes someone, that person will still be able to view the previous update.
Additional Privacy Options and Visual Indicators
In addition to the 'Close Friends' list, WhatsApp has introduced three other privacy options for sharing status updates. Once a status is shared, selected contacts will see different colored rings around the profile picture of the user who posted it, providing a clear visual indicator of the update's audience.
The 'Close Friends' feature is currently under development and is expected to be rolled out in a future version of WhatsApp. This update aligns with Meta's ongoing efforts to enhance user experience and privacy across its platforms, making WhatsApp more versatile beyond just instant messaging.
