Nagpur has successfully leveraged a cutting-edge artificial intelligence system to bolster security and manage large crowds during a key political event. The AI-powered platform, named AI Nirikshak, was deployed during the recent Winter Assembly Session held in the city and proved to be a significant asset for law enforcement.
AI Vigilance in Action: Hundreds of Alerts Raised
The system demonstrated remarkable real-time vigilance throughout the session. According to official data, AI Nirikshak triggered a total of 449 distinct alerts in and around the Vidhan Bhavan premises. This included a staggering 389 alerts for potential overcrowding, which helped authorities manage foot traffic and prevent unsafe gatherings.
Beyond crowd density, the AI's advanced analytics identified specific security concerns. It raised 58 alerts for suspected objects that were deemed potentially objectionable. Furthermore, it detected two vehicles attempting entry into restricted, no-entry zones. These precise alerts enabled the Nagpur Police to intervene swiftly, mitigating possible risks during a period marked by large gatherings and protests.
Proactive Policing and Official Acclaim
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Lohit Matani confirmed the system's effectiveness. He stated that the timely alerts allowed for rapid police action, averting potential security threats. While the specific nature of the suspicious objects and details of the two flagged vehicles remain under investigation and cannot be divulged, DCP Matani emphasized that the platform's primary value was in its proactive monitoring capability.
Commissioner of Police Ravinder Singal also praised the AI Nirikshak. He highlighted that by preventing overcrowding, enabling rapid responses, and optimizing the deployment of manpower, the system ensured smoother operations and heightened security throughout the session. "With timely alerts on objectionable objects and suspicious vehicles, AI Nirikshak helped us remove all the red-flagged problems at the earliest," CP Singal said.
Technology and Future Expansion
The AI Nirikshak platform is a sophisticated piece of technology. It is built on advanced computer vision and deep-learning analytics and runs entirely on Microsoft's modern AI cloud infrastructure. The system integrates data from multiple sources, including existing CCTV feeds and drone surveillance, to provide comprehensive, real-time video analytics for proactive threat detection.
The project was a collaborative effort, conceptualized and deployed by DCPs Lohit Matani, Hrishikesh Reddy, and Deepak Aggrawal in partnership with technology firm Click2Cloud. DCP Matani noted that Nagpur is among the first cities in India to operationalize such a large-scale, AI-driven crowd and security management system.
Looking ahead, the system's success has paved the way for an expanded role. Official sources indicate that the platform will soon be equipped with specific tools and specially designated software to aid in the fight against terrorism, marking a significant evolution in its application. The city police have already installed similar AI-powered surveillance systems at other high-risk locations across Nagpur, including the RSS headquarters, RBI, the airport, and major railway stations.
