Artificial Intelligence and new digital technologies will soon transform fish farming in Goa. These tools will help tackle diseases, boost productivity, and manage fish resources with scientific precision. Sanjay Pandey, deputy commissioner of fisheries, made this announcement during the National Conference on Fisheries and Aquaculture in Panaji.
AI's Role in Modern Fisheries
Pandey explained that AI will play a crucial role in curing fish diseases, increasing production, and improving fisheries management. The government plans to actively encourage young entrepreneurs and startups to take up AI-based projects in the fisheries sector across Goa and other districts.
Current Innovations and Future Potential
The ministry has already interacted with several innovative companies deploying AI and Internet of Things solutions in fisheries and aquaculture. Pandey acknowledged that these innovations are still at an early stage in India but hold immense potential for the sector's future.
Goa's Ideal Landscape for AI Adoption
When asked about Goa's readiness to adopt AI in day-to-day fisheries activities, Pandey highlighted the state's diverse fisheries landscape. This includes capture fisheries, brackish water fisheries, freshwater fisheries, sea farming, cage culture, and traditional fishing. This diversity makes Goa an ideal place to adopt and demonstrate AI-driven solutions.
Government Initiatives and Collaborations
Pandey revealed that the Union government, in collaboration with the Goa government, is currently developing programs for the fisheries sector. These programs will include the promotion of AI-based technologies and other innovations to modernize the industry.
