Andhra Pradesh's Energy Sector Embraces AI for a Sustainable Future
In a groundbreaking move, Andhra Pradesh is spearheading a paradigm shift in its energy sector by integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the core of decision-making processes. This transformation is setting new benchmarks in efficiency, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness, as detailed in an exclusive interview with Special Chief Secretary (Energy) and Special CS to Chief Minister, K Vijayanand.
Vision and Implementation of AI in Energy
The state's vision is ambitious yet straightforward: to deliver reliable, affordable, and sustainable 24×7 power to every consumer. By embedding intelligent forecasting, automated scheduling, and real-time analytics into energy systems, Andhra Pradesh is transitioning from reactive power management to predictive and optimized operations. This shift fundamentally alters how power is procured, distributed, and consumed across the region.
AI-Driven Power Purchase Decisions
The AP State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC) is at the forefront of this innovation, deploying advanced AI-based models to forecast electricity demand and renewable energy generation with high accuracy. These forecasts, generated on a day-ahead and intra-day basis—sometimes at 15-minute intervals—enable smarter power procurement decisions, minimizing costly last-minute purchases and enhancing financial stability for distribution companies (DISCOMs).
Cost Savings and Financial Benefits
Cost optimization is a key advantage of this AI integration. Andhra Pradesh aims to reduce the average power purchase cost to ₹4.20 per unit by 2030 and further to ₹3.90 per unit by 2035. AI facilitates buying power at the right time, from the right source, and at the right price, thereby reducing inefficiencies and reliance on expensive short-term markets.
Managing Renewable Energy with AI
Renewable energy integration poses significant challenges due to the variable nature of solar and wind power. AI helps predict generation patterns with high precision, ensuring better grid balancing and reducing the need for backup thermal power. As the state scales up green energy initiatives, AI will be critical in maintaining grid stability while maximizing renewable utilization.
Broader Benefits of Digital Transformation
The benefits of this digital overhaul extend beyond cost reduction:
- Operational Efficiency: Enhanced across generation, transmission, and distribution.
- Loss Reduction: Decreased technical and commercial losses.
- Service Reliability: Improved for consumers through better management.
- Financial Health: Strengthened utilities with automation in forecasting, bidding, and scheduling, reducing human intervention and errors.
Preparing for Rising Power Demand
With agricultural and industrial expansion driving demand, Andhra Pradesh faces daily consumption of 250–260 million units and peak loads nearing 14,000 MW. To address this, the state combines AI-based demand forecasting with meticulous planning, ensuring adequate power availability through a mix of state generation, renewable energy, and optimized market purchases. Grid readiness and network reliability are also being fortified.
Future Positioning in India's Energy Landscape
Andhra Pradesh aspires to be a leader in smart and sustainable energy management. By leveraging AI, expanding renewable capacity, and strengthening infrastructure, the state is building a future-ready power sector. This transformation aims not only to meet demand but to do so efficiently, economically, and sustainably, ensuring long-term energy security and serving as a model for other regions.
