Ahmad Al-Dahle officially joined Airbnb this week, bringing extensive experience in generative AI from his time at Meta. He previously led AI initiatives for Facebook and Instagram and oversaw the team responsible for developing Meta's open-source Llama models.

Al-Dahle succeeds Ari Balogh, who departed the company in December after serving as CTO for seven years. In his new role, Al-Dahle will manage Airbnb's engineering and data science teams, guiding the company's technological direction.

The appointment drew attention from prominent figures in the tech industry, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Altman publicly welcomed Al-Dahle to Airbnb through a post on X, formerly Twitter.

Chesky described the future of Airbnb's platform as moving beyond anonymous customer searches. "What that means is moving away from an anonymous customer just searching, and making sure everyone's search, everyone's conversation is unique to them," he said.

The company plans to incorporate users' complete interaction histories to create personalized experiences. "It's not going to look like old search, it's not going to look like a chatbot," Chesky noted. "It's going to have to marry the best of both worlds."

He further explained that the new interface would feature more visual components alongside reduced text-based interactions. This approach will help users quickly access their preferred options from previous searches.
