In a major push to bring powerful artificial intelligence directly to machines and vehicles, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has announced two new series of processors designed specifically for AI applications at the edge. The newly launched Ryzen AI Embedded P100 series and the upcoming X100 series are engineered to deliver high-performance computing with low power consumption for the demanding automotive, industrial, and autonomous systems sectors.

Zen 5 Power Meets Advanced AI Acceleration

Built on the cutting-edge Zen 5 CPU architecture, these compact processors combine robust CPU, GPU, and Neural Processing Unit (NPU) capabilities. The star of the show is the new XDNA 2 NPU inside the P100 series, which delivers a staggering up to 50 TOPS (Tera Operations Per Second) of AI inference power. This marks a threefold increase compared to the AI performance of the previous Ryzen Embedded 8000 series.

The integrated RDNA 3.5 graphics are no slouch either, supporting up to four 4K displays at 120Hz or two 8K displays at 120Hz, with rendering speeds 35% faster than the last generation. This makes the chips ideal for creating immersive digital cockpits and advanced human-machine interfaces (HMIs) in next-generation vehicles.

Engineered for the Toughest Environments

AMD has designed these processors with extreme reliability in mind. They feature a scalable Thermal Design Power (TDP) ranging from 15W to 54W and are built to withstand an industrial temperature range of -40°C to +105°C. Backed by a 10-year longevity commitment and AEC Q100 qualification for automotive applications, they are built to last in harsh, real-world conditions from factory floors to moving vehicles.

Performance sees a massive generational leap, with the new chips offering up to 2.2 times the single-threaded and multi-threaded performance boost over their predecessors. This is driven by the advanced 4nm Zen 5 and 5c cores capable of boost speeds up to 4.5GHz.

The processors come packed with high-speed I/O to handle massive data flows, including:

  • 14 PCIe Gen4 lanes
  • Dual USB4 ports
  • 10GbE networking with Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) support
  • ECC memory support for data integrity

Memory options include DDR5 5600 or high-speed LPDDR5X 8000. On the software front, AMD provides an open stack covering Ryzen AI tools, the Xen hypervisor for secure virtualization, Yocto Linux, and Android Automotive. The immediate availability of the P100 series, with 4 to 6 core variants like the P121, P132, and automotive-grade P132a, targets a wide array of applications. These include:
