AP Minister Proposes Filming Locations in Movie Subtitles to Boost Tourism
AP Minister Wants Filming Locations in Movie Subtitles for Tourism

Can movie subtitles double up as tourism promotion tools? Andhra Pradesh Tourism Minister Kandula Durgesh believes they can. During his recent visit to Suryalanka Beach, Andhra Pradesh, the minister proposed that filmmakers mention shooting locations in movie subtitles to boost tourism and spotlight scenic destinations across the state. Citing the example of Maredumilli, which saw increased tourist footfall after featuring in Pushpa: The Rise, Durgesh said cinema can transform lesser-known places into tourist hotspots. The proposal has since triggered sarcastic reactions online.

Minister's Vision

"Films have the power to transform lesser-known places into major tourist attractions. By mentioning shooting locations in the subtitles, it can help give these destinations wider recognition and potentially boost local tourism," said Kandula Durgesh, Andhra Pradesh Minister for Tourism, Culture and Cinematography.

Filmmakers' Concerns

However, the idea has been met with criticism from filmmakers. Director Varun Reddy argued, "Locations in subtitles will interrupt the cinematic experience. Making such details mandatory could burden small directors already navigating multiple post-production requirements." Similarly, director Chandoo Mondeti stated, "We try to make audiences believe in the world we create, so revealing the exact location could affect the storytelling." Another filmmaker, Sashi Kiran Tikka, added, "Unlike statutory disclaimers, inserting tourism promotion within scenes could feel forced and tacky."

Actor Rahul Ramakrishna sarcastically suggested, "Or shoot a tourism promo ad of the location and insert it into the film, no? Integrate it with a QR code payment."

The debate continues as the tourism department explores innovative ways to leverage cinema for destination marketing.
