New Apple Variety Named After Himachal Farmer Joginder Singh Kanwar
Apple Variety Named After Himachal Farmer Kanwar

A central government body has named a new apple variety after Joginder Singh Kanwar, a farmer from Shimla district who passed away five months ago. The Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Rights Authority registered the variety as "Kanwar Majholi Selection-1".

The Discovery

The discovery dates back to 2016, when Kanwar spotted an unusual variant growing on a "Red Delicious" tree in his orchard. While the variety has been in decline across Himachal, this mutation caught his attention, prompting him to contact the horticulture department.

Research and Verification

Experts spent nearly six years conducting research to verify the fruit's characteristics. After concluding that the variant was indeed unique, the department recommended its registration to the central authority.
