Solomon expressed being "deeply disturbed" by the company's handling of the case involving Jesse Van Rootselaar, an 18-year-old who authorities say killed eight people in the rural community of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, before taking her own life.

An investigation by the New York Times revealed that Van Rootselaar exhibited a troubling fascination with weapons and extreme violence, as documented in her social media accounts, alongside her struggles with mental health issues. According to OpenAI, internal flags were raised in June of last year when messages sent by Van Rootselaar to her ChatGPT chatbot triggered the company's abuse detection systems.

OpenAI's Internal Review and Decision-Making Process

OpenAI stated that after its abuse detection system—which employs a combination of automated tools and staff investigations—identified concerning messages from her account, Van Rootselaar was promptly banned from the platform. Her use of ChatGPT prior to the shooting was initially reported by the Wall Street Journal, bringing the case to public attention.

The company acknowledged that it had considered alerting law enforcement about the shooter's account but ultimately decided against it. OpenAI defended this decision by asserting that it determined there was no credible planning on the part of the user.
