Writer-director Craig Mazin, known for critically acclaimed series such as Chernobyl and The Last of Us, has stated that comedy is the most challenging genre to master and that critics often fail to give it proper recognition.
Mazin's New Comedy Film
Mazin's latest project, The Sheep Detective, is a comedy about talking farm animals who investigate the death of their shepherd, portrayed by Hugh Jackman. The film is an adaptation of Leonie Swann's novel Three Bags Full and has been a passion project for Mazin for nearly two decades.
Critics and Comedy
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Mazin expressed his frustration with how critics approach comedy. He said, "Well, to start with, critics don't give comedy its due. And it is the hardest thing to do." He further argued that the Academy Awards should exclusively consider comedies for Best Picture, noting, "Best picture at the Academy Awards should only be comedies as far as I'm concerned. It's just understood that best picture of the year goes to something very serious. That's that."
Drawing from his own experience, Mazin compared writing comedy to drama: "It's so much harder to write Scary Movie 3 than it is to write Chernobyl. And I know this from personal experience. I also think people get into film criticism because of their love of comedy."
Cast and Release
The Sheep Detective features a star-studded voice cast including Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Brett Goldstein, Regina Hall, Emma Thompson, and Hong Chau. The film is currently playing in theaters.
Mazin is widely recognized for his work on the 2019 miniseries Chernobyl, which depicted the 1986 nuclear disaster, and The Last of Us, a video game adaptation. He also served as a screenwriter on Scary Movie 3.
