Gemini AI to Power Boston Dynamics Robots in Hyundai Factories

In a significant leap for industrial automation, Google's AI research lab, DeepMind, has announced a partnership with robotics pioneer Boston Dynamics. The collaboration, unveiled at CES 2026, will see the integration of Google's Gemini Robotics AI models into Boston Dynamics' humanoid and quadruped robots for real-world testing on Hyundai's factory floors.

From Acrobatics to Contextual Awareness

The core objective of this partnership is to move robots beyond pre-programmed movements and into the realm of intelligent, context-aware assistants. While Boston Dynamics' Atlas humanoid robot is famed for its dynamic dancing and acrobatics, it currently lacks the ability to understand its environment or make complex decisions about object manipulation.

Robert Playter, CEO of Boston Dynamics, emphasised this shift in a statement to Wired. He stated that "the real value going forward is for our robots to be contextually aware of their environment and able to use their hands to manipulate any object." He identified manufacturing environments, specifically those of Hyundai, as the ideal proving ground for this new technology.

The Gemini AI Upgrade: Seeing and Understanding

The upgrade will involve deploying Google DeepMind's Gemini Robotics AI models onto Boston Dynamics' robots, including the Atlas humanoid and the Spot robot dog. These models are designed to allow robots to see, reason, use tools, and interact with their surroundings and humans.

Atlas comes equipped with impressive hardware: 56 degrees of freedom, rotation joints, human-sized hands with tactile sensing, and 360-degree cameras. It can lift weights of up to 110 pounds and perform repetitive motions with ease. However, the infusion of Gemini AI is expected to be the key that allows Atlas to not just see, but truly comprehend and navigate unfamiliar spaces within a factory setting.

Hyundai's Role and Future Roadmap

Hyundai, which holds a stake in Boston Dynamics, is set to be the primary beneficiary and testing ground for this advanced robotics initiative. Trials for the Gemini-powered Atlas robots in Hyundai factories are scheduled to begin sometime this year.

The automaker has a clear vision for deployment, aiming to use these advanced humanoids for tasks like part sequencing by 2028. To support this ambition, Hyundai is also establishing a new facility in the United States called the Robot Metaplant Application Center. This centre will be dedicated to training robots in essential physical tasks such as lifting and turning objects, preparing them for integration into complex manufacturing workflows.

This announcement builds on the legacy of both companies. Boston Dynamics has been a leader in advanced mobility robots, even supplying military-grade systems, while Google DeepMind recently unveiled its groundbreaking Gemini Robotics models. Their combined effort marks a pivotal step towards creating intelligent, general-purpose robots for the industrial world.
