Gukesh Admits Criticism Over Recent Form Is Justified

New Delhi: D Gukesh has acknowledged that the criticism directed at his recent performances is warranted, stating that he understands why former champions have questioned his form. The reigning world champion, who is set to defend his title later this year, admitted that he has not played up to expectations over the past 18 months but remains committed to improving.

Gukesh Responds to Critics

Speaking ahead of the Norway Chess tournament, Gukesh told the Press Trust of India, “Most of the critical comments made by former greats I don't see, but there are some that I have heard and I think it's fair.” He added, “They have the right to say what they feel and I have the right to do my best.”

Struggles Since Winning World Title

Since defeating Ding Liren to become world champion in 2024, Gukesh has struggled for consistency. His recent results include a 10th-place finish at the Tata Steel Chess tournament, ninth in Prague, and sixth at the Superbet Rapid & Blitz event in Poland.

Several chess legends, including Magnus Carlsen, Ian Nepomniachtchi, and Anatoly Karpov, have openly questioned the quality of his recent games. Karpov even suggested that Gukesh won the world title “by accident.”

Defending the Title: A Tougher Challenge

Gukesh acknowledged that defending the world title will be more difficult than winning it for the first time due to added pressure and expectations. However, he insisted his main focus remains simple: “Yeah, I'll try my best to win.”

Carlsen's Viral Reaction

The young Indian also reflected on Carlsen’s viral table-banging reaction after losing to him last year, noting that moments like that help attract more people to chess and bring global attention to the sport.
