India's Special Forces (SF) are the elite units of the Indian Armed Forces, comprising the Army's Para (SF), the Navy's Marine Commandos (MARCOS), and the Air Force's Garuds. These operatives are trained to operate deep behind enemy lines, conducting covert and overt missions ranging from intelligence gathering to direct kinetic actions such as surgical raids, ambushes, demolition, and counter-terror operations.
Early Triumphs: 1971 War
During the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War, India's Special Forces showcased their capabilities. The Army's 10 Para (Commando) battalion captured 3,000 square kilometers of territory in Rajasthan's southern borders. Meanwhile, the 9th battalion of the Parachute Regiment destroyed a Pakistani artillery battery in the Poonch sector, a key factor in India's dominance there.
Operation Pawan: Nighttime Heliborne Assault
As part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) in Sri Lanka, Special Forces executed a daring nighttime heliborne mission to capture LTTE leader Prabhakaran. Though he evaded capture, the operation demonstrated tenacity and urban combat skills.
Operation Cactus: Maldives Rescue
In 1988, India launched Operation Cactus to thwart a coup in Maldives. A Para SF unit was airlifted to rescue President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, secure Male, and stabilize the nation, highlighting rapid deployment and regional security commitment.
MARCOS Strike in Andamans
In 1998, the Navy's MARCOS conducted a covert strike against gunrunners and insurgents on Landfall Island in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, dismantling a major smuggling network linked to Northeast arms suppliers.
Kargil War and Beyond
During the 1999 Kargil War, SF units conducted reconnaissance and direct assaults on Pakistani positions, including vertical cliff climbs depicted in the film Lakshya. In 2000, Para SF executed a hostage rescue in Sierra Leone, saving over 200 Indian soldiers surrounded by rebels, under the UN flag.
Cross-Border Operations
In 2011, Operation Ginger involved a punitive cross-LoC raid against Pakistani posts, inflicting heavy casualties and destroying bunkers. After the 2015 Manipur ambush, Para SF conducted a cross-border raid into Myanmar, destroying militant camps with clinical precision. Following the Uri attack, commandos executed cross-LoC strikes targeting terrorist launch pads in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, redefining India's counter-terror posture.
Counter-Terror and Recent Operations
Special Forces have been active in counter-terror operations in Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast. Operation Mahadev tracked down perpetrators of the Pahalgam massacre, while in 2020, Operation Randori Behak saw Para SF jumping into danger to reinforce comrades, demonstrating extraordinary commitment.
From Maldives to Myanmar, Sierra Leone to Kargil, India's Special Forces have proven their mettle in jungles, mountains, islands, and urban settings. Each operation reflects tactical acumen, and cross-border missions have delivered deterrence to enemies and reassurance to citizens.
