Contract and Production Details

India signed a contract worth Rs 21,935 crore with Spain for the acquisition of 56 C-295 transport aircraft. Under this agreement, 16 aircraft will be delivered in fly-away condition, while the remaining 40 will be manufactured in India. The Tata-Airbus manufacturing plant in Vadodara, which was inaugurated on October 28, 2024, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, is responsible for the local production.

Role of the C-295 Aircraft

The C-295 aircraft is designed to replace the aging Avro-748 fleet of the Indian Air Force. It will be utilized for a variety of missions, including troop transport, cargo movement, medical evacuation, and special operations. The aircraft is powered by two Pratt & Whitney PW127G turboprop engines, offering short take-off and landing capabilities, and can operate from rugged and semi-prepared airstrips.

Indigenous Electronic Warfare Suite

Each C-295 aircraft will be equipped with an indigenous electronic warfare suite, developed jointly by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), and Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL). This integration underscores the commitment to self-reliance in defense technology.

The successful assembly and upcoming flight test of the first domestically produced C-295 aircraft highlight India's growing capabilities in aerospace manufacturing and its dedication to the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.
