iPhone 18 Pro to Get Major Satellite Connectivity Upgrades: Report
iPhone 18 Pro Satellite Upgrades: Report

Apple is reportedly planning significant enhancements to satellite connectivity in its upcoming iPhone 18 Pro lineup, according to a recent report by 9to5Mac. The new models could feature advanced 5G satellite technology that allows users to stay connected even in areas with weak cellular coverage. Satellite features were first introduced with the iPhone 14 in 2022, primarily for emergency situations. However, the iPhone 18 Pro and a possible iPhone Ultra model may transform satellite connectivity into a reliable everyday feature for travel, poor network coverage, or remote-area use.

New C2 Modem and 5G NR-NTN Technology

According to the report, Apple's next-generation flagship iPhones may incorporate a new C2 modem that supports both standard 5G connectivity and satellite communication. This modem is expected to enable 5G NR-NTN (New Radio Non-Terrestrial Networks), a technology that combines satellite communication with traditional 5G networks. This integration could allow for seamless transitions between cellular and satellite signals.

Automatic Satellite Switching

One of the most anticipated improvements is that users may no longer need to manually point their iPhone toward the sky to connect to a satellite. Instead, the phone could automatically switch to satellite connectivity when cellular signals become weak. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has previously suggested that Apple aims to keep users connected even when their iPhone is inside a pocket, a car, or indoors. If the new technology performs as expected, satellite support on the iPhone 18 Pro could become useful not only during emergencies but also in everyday situations where mobile coverage is unreliable.

Launch and Design Expectations

Reports indicate that Apple may unveil the Pro models—iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max—alongside its first foldable iPhone during the fall event in September. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is likely to be the most expensive model in the series, featuring high-end cameras, a powerful processor, and an improved battery. The smartphone is also rumored to undergo major design changes, including a smaller Dynamic Island.

New Color Options and Processor

According to online leaks, the 2026 iPhone Pro models may be offered in new color options such as Silver, Light Blue, Dark Cherry, and Dark Gray. The devices are expected to be powered by Apple's new A20 Pro chip, the company's first processor manufactured using a 2nm process. Additionally, the chip will employ "Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module" (WMCM) packaging, making it more compact and powerful.

Camera Upgrades

On the camera front, reports suggest Apple could introduce a mechanical iris system, allowing the camera to adjust the amount of light it captures. This feature may enhance low-light photography, portraits, and natural background blur.
