Kanyakumari district police have launched ‘Kaaval AI,’ an in-house, cost-effective traffic monitoring system that displays real-time vehicle violations on LED screens to improve enforcement and public awareness. The system enhances existing ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras by displaying the registration numbers of violating vehicles on LED screens at traffic signals.
Inauguration and Development
District Superintendent of Police R Stalin inaugurated the initiative on Tuesday at the roundabout near the district collectorate in Nagercoil. The system was developed in collaboration with students from Rajalakshmi Engineering College, Chennai. Speaking to TOI, Stalin highlighted that the system is cost-effective compared to standard ANPR cameras, which can cost around ₹40,000 per piece.
How It Works
The new system captures traffic violations using AI technology. A dedicated police team monitors violations via a mobile app. After scrutinizing the violation, police issue challans. Stalin added, “In the future, we will upgrade the system to detect violations such as overspeeding, not wearing a seatbelt, and rash driving. We are also working to automatically issue challans for detected violations.”
Technical Details
The system was developed by a team of four students with two mentors from the college’s School of Computer Science. Student Sajiv B I explained that the system can integrate with any type of CCTV camera, unlike existing ANPR technology that requires specialized ANPR cameras. “We used pretrained models for vehicle detection, identifying violations, and extracting vehicle numbers,” he said. The idea was proposed during the ‘Kaval Hackathon,’ a competition conducted by Kanyakumari district police in January.
