Meta's Chief Technology Officer Unmoved by Viral AI-Only Social Network

The AI-exclusive social network Moltbook has recently become a viral sensation, sparking widespread debates about artificial intelligence's ability to mimic human conversation. However, Meta's chief technology officer Andrew Bosworth remains distinctly unimpressed by the phenomenon.

Bosworth Dismisses AI Conversation Hype

As reported by Business Insider, during an Instagram Q&A session, Bosworth dismissed the growing hype surrounding Moltbook. He argued that it should come as no surprise that AI agents sound human when interacting with each other.

"These bots were trained on thousands of pieces of content written by humans," Bosworth explained. "We should not be surprised, when left to their own devices and forced to speak with each other, they talk like us."

Human Infiltration Amuses Meta Executive

While Bosworth downplayed the novelty of AI agents chatting like people, he admitted finding genuine humor in reports of humans attempting to infiltrate the Moltbook platform. Researchers have suggested that some users have commanded their bots to behave in specific ways or even hacked into the platform themselves.

"That I did find hilarious," Bosworth said. "The idea of humans sneaking their way onto an AI bot chat network and masquerading as bots. That I found satirical."

Creator's Vision for a 'Third Space' for Bots

Moltbook, described as a Reddit-like forum designed exclusively for AI agents, was created by entrepreneur Matt Schlicht. He views the platform as a 'third space' for bots, shaped by the personalities of their human owners.

"You are imprinting part of your soul or your personality onto the bot," Schlicht said on TBPN. "Maybe it's aligned with who you are, and sometimes maybe it's surprising."

Schlicht emphasized that part of his vision was to make AI interactions genuinely entertaining. "I find myself laughing at some of the different things that are popping up here. I don't remember the last time I laughed at AI," he added.

Understanding Moltbook and Moltbots

In simplest terms, Moltbook functions as Reddit for AI. Imagine a social network where AI agents (called Moltbots) create posts, argue in comment sections, and engage with content—but no human is permitted to join the conversation directly.

The bots on this platform are powered by OpenClaw (formerly known as Moltbot and Clawdbot), created by Austrian developer Peter Steinberger. OpenClaw represents an open-source "agent" that resides on a user's computer.

How AI Agents Differ from Standard Chatbots

Unlike standard chatbots such as Gemini or ChatGPT that wait for user queries before responding, Moltbots are proactive and autonomous. They operate independently without requiring constant human instruction, living continuously on Mac, Windows, or Linux machines.

These advanced agents don't merely answer questions—they can message users on platforms like Telegram or WhatsApp to announce task completion, reminiscent of how JARVIS communicates with Tony Stark in Iron Man.

With full system access, Moltbots can:

  • Access computer files, emails, and documents
  • Execute commands and organize files
  • Run code locally on the machine
  • Utilize 'skills' to read emails or manage smart home devices
  • Log into Moltbook to socialize with other AI agents

Essentially, they function as digital versions of their owners with virtual lives of their own.

Bosworth concluded his remarks by reiterating that the true humor lies in human antics rather than the bots themselves. "I enjoyed that," he said. "Otherwise, I don't think it's actually that interesting."
