NITI Aayog Member Urges India to Control AI, Boost Healthcare Tech
NITI Aayog: India Must Master AI for Development

NITI Aayog Member Calls for Indian Control Over AI Technologies

Dr Vinod Kumar Paul, a member of NITI Aayog, made a strong statement on Monday. He said India must keep complete control over artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies. Dr Paul warned that failing to master these technologies could slow down the country's development.

Healthcare Sector Needs Extensive AI Use

Dr Paul spoke at a conference focused on AI and health innovation in Lucknow. He emphasized that AI and advanced technologies should be used widely in the health sector. These technologies can improve many areas. They include clinical decision-making, diagnostics, telemedicine, public health delivery, and research.

He referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent message at the Chief Secretaries' Conference. Dr Paul quoted the Prime Minister, saying, "If we do not achieve mastery over technology, development will be hindered."

Push for Indigenous AI Solutions

Dr Paul stressed the importance of self-reliance. He advocated for developing and deploying home-grown AI technologies. These solutions should be tailored to India's specific needs. He explained that indigenous technologies are critical for ensuring data security. They also support the long-term sustainability of digital healthcare systems.

He highlighted the central role of data in making AI effective. "AI will yield better results only when it is backed by quality data," Dr Paul said. "The better and larger the dataset, the more impactful the AI outcomes will be."

Call for Institutional Integration

Dr Paul called for greater institutional integration to boost AI in healthcare. He urged the state government to link premier medical institutions on a common digital platform. These institutions include AIIMS, King George's Medical University (KGMU), and the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research. Other tertiary hospitals should also be connected.

He said such integration would enable seamless data exchange. This would significantly improve the application of AI in healthcare. A proposed data-sharing framework could strengthen disease surveillance. It could enhance diagnostics and support evidence-based policymaking. This aligns with the Centre's broader push to harness AI for public health and governance.

Uttar Pradesh Expanding Telemedicine Network

Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak also spoke at the event. He said Uttar Pradesh recognizes the role AI can play in improving healthcare access. The state is working extensively to expand its telemedicine network to reach the last mile.

Pathak mentioned that the recently approved supplementary budget had earmarked funds for this expansion. The telemedicine network run by SGPGI in Lucknow will benefit from these funds. He noted that the state has been building health infrastructure over the past nine years. This foundation will enable the embrace of AI and new-age technologies in public health.
