Palace on Wheels to Run in May for First Time in 43 Years
Palace on Wheels to Run in May for First Time in 43 Years

In a landmark move, Rajasthan's royal ride, the Palace on Wheels, will be running in the month of May. The legendary train, which needs no introduction, is synonymous with Rajasthan's luxury vibe. Traditionally operating between September and April, the train takes travelers through royal cities, desert forts, and wildlife reserves on a week-long journey. This year, it breaks its 43-year-old tradition by running in May for the first time ever.

Official Confirmation

The news was confirmed by Amit Sudarshan, Chief Public Relations Officer of North Western Railway, who stated to the Indian Express: 'Yes, the train will operate in May. This will be the first time it is running during the month. Earlier, services were not scheduled in May due to the heat. However, this time, there has been significant demand, which is why the train will run.'

Reason Behind the Landmark Decision

The main reason behind this decision is a sharp rise in passenger interest. The train secured a special charter booking outside its usual operating calendar, and reports indicate a 45 percent surge in passengers.

History of the Train

The Palace on Wheels was launched in 1982 by the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation (RTDC) and Indian Railways. Described as a moving palace, its interiors showcase the grandeur of Rajput courts with silk decor, royal motifs, and personalized butler service. Personal attendants known as Khidmatgars enhance the experience.

Itinerary

The train follows a 7-night, 8-day itinerary starting from New Delhi's Safdarjung Railway Station. It takes travelers through Jaipur, Sawai Madhopur, Chittorgarh, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Bharatpur, and Agra, ending in Delhi. En route, travelers enjoy palace visits, folk performances, dune dinners, tiger safaris, and sunrise views of the Taj Mahal.

Why the May Departure is News

May is the peak summer month in Rajasthan, and the train traditionally avoided this period due to heat. However, evolving travel trends, passenger demand, and improved facilities have prompted this change.

Luxury Train Travel

Luxury trains globally attract travelers seeking immersive journeys rather than fast-paced itineraries. Rajasthan's hotels, heritage walks, and desert experiences are among the most attractive. The May departure indicates travelers' readiness to explore Rajasthan's summer season.
