Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has officially commenced operations at its newly formed artificial intelligence subsidiary, Reliance Intelligence (REIL). This strategic move marks a significant deepening of the conglomerate's investment in cutting-edge technology and its ambition to shape India's AI future.
Leadership and Talent Hunt for National AI Mission
The ambitious venture will be spearheaded by Gaurav Aggarwal, who serves as the chief AI scientist at Reliance Jio. Aggarwal, an AI researcher with prior experience at Google DeepMind and IBM, and leadership roles at Ola and Snapdeal, assumed his position at Jio in May 2024.
He has now taken to professional networks like X (formerly Twitter) and LinkedIn to kickstart a major recruitment drive. The company is actively seeking AI and Machine Learning (ML) engineers with expertise in areas such as training pipelines, distributed systems, model optimisation, and deep learning research.
"At Reliance Intelligence, we're assembling a team that can push what is technically possible in India's AI ecosystem," Aggarwal declared in a social media post. He extended a call to action, stating, "Whether we’ve worked together or you’ve followed my journey from afar: if you have the skills and the fire, I want you on this team." The primary focus of these hires will be on Indic-language model development and new product incubation.
Strategic Partnerships and Massive Infrastructure
Reliance Intelligence, incorporated in September 2025, is a wholly-owned unit of RIL designed to house its AI partnerships with global tech giants. A key aspect of its formation is a joint venture with Meta Platforms.
Under this JV arrangement, Reliance Intelligence holds a 70% stake, while Meta's arm, Facebook, holds the remaining 30%. The two entities have jointly committed an initial investment of Rs 855 crore. REIL will be responsible for developing, marketing, and distributing enterprise AI services.
To power these initiatives, the Reliance group is already constructing a gigawatt-scale AI-ready data centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat. This infrastructure underscores the scale at which the company plans to operate.
Early Moves and Consumer Offerings
Even before the formal hiring announcement, Reliance Intelligence had begun making its presence felt in the market. In a significant consumer-facing move, October this year saw the rollout of a major offer in partnership with Google.
Eligible Jio users started receiving Google’s AI Pro plan, featuring the latest Google Gemini, free of charge for 18 months. This premium package, valued at Rs 35,100, includes enhanced access to the Gemini 2.5 Pro model, higher limits for image and video generation with Nano Banana and Veo 3.1 models, access to Notebook LM, and 2 TB of cloud storage.
The launch of Reliance Intelligence, backed by substantial capital, top-tier global partnerships, and a clear focus on building indigenous AI capabilities for Indian languages, positions RIL as a formidable player in the nation's rapidly evolving technology landscape. The success of its talent acquisition will be crucial in determining how quickly it can translate this vision into reality.
