Russia has released a new rendering of a two-seater variant of its fifth-generation Su-57 aircraft, designated the Su-57D, according to Russian military blogger Ilya Tumanov. The image reveals an enlarged cockpit and a longer canopy to accommodate a second crew member.
Background of the Su-57 and India's Involvement
The Sukhoi-57 originated from the Indo-Russian joint Fifth-Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) program. India withdrew from the FGFA due to disagreements over the requirement for a two-seat variant, which Russia initially opposed. Subsequently, India launched its own Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program, expected to deliver an operational variant by 2034–2035, though prototypes will fly earlier.
Regional Stealth Jet Race
India faces a growing threat as China already operates the stealthy J-20 fighter, deployed near the Tibetan border, and Pakistan is set to acquire the Chinese-origin J-35 fifth-generation fighter. Additionally, China is testing two sixth-generation aircraft. This leaves India at a disadvantage until the AMCA is operational.
Su-57 Reemerges as a Viable Option
With the AMCA still a decade away, the Su-57 is again being considered as the most viable interim solution for the Indian Air Force (IAF). Russia is offering transfer of technology (ToT) and local production, which could boost India's interest, especially with the new two-seater variant.

Significance of the Twin-Seater Variant
The twin-seater Su-57 highlights Russia's focus on manned-unmanned teaming, where the fighter controls loyal wingman drones. The extra crew member will manage Russia's S-70 Okhotnik stealth drone and enhance battlefield situational awareness. For India, this aligns with the IAF's move toward network-centric warfare and programs like the CATS Warrior loyal wingman.
Given the growing capabilities of regional adversaries, the Su-57 could provide a crucial interim fifth-generation capability until the AMCA enters service. Its powerful radars, sensor suites, and loyal wingman operations could significantly strengthen the IAF's combat capabilities.
