Pioneering Cardiac Procedure in Dharwad
In a significant advancement for cardiac treatment in the region, SDM Narayana Heart Centre in Dharwad has successfully performed the implantation of a leadless dual-chamber pacemaker. This cutting-edge technology brings sophisticated heart care closer to patients who previously had to rely on metropolitan hospitals for such procedures.
Procedure Details
The procedure was led by noted cardiologist Dr. Raghu Prasad S and his team. The patient, a 68-year-old individual suffering from severe bradycardia—a condition characterized by an abnormally slow heart rate—had been experiencing recurrent episodes of unconsciousness. Upon admission, his heart rate was critically low at just 30 beats per minute.
Given the urgency and complexity of the case, the medical team opted for the latest leadless dual-chamber pacemaker technology. This fully wireless system is designed to overcome the limitations of conventional pacemakers.
How It Works
Unlike traditional devices that require surgical implantation in the chest along with wired leads, this new-generation pacemaker is implanted directly inside the heart using a minimally invasive catheter-based technique. The hour-long procedure was performed under local anesthesia. Two small pacemaker capsules were placed in the upper and lower right chambers of the heart through a catheter inserted via the groin.
Dr. Raghu Prasad explained that this technology significantly reduces complications associated with conventional pacemakers, such as infections, lead dislodgement, and visible scarring. The absence of surgical pockets and wires ensures quicker recovery, minimal bleeding, and improved patient comfort.
Advanced Features
According to the medical team, the device offers a longer battery life of up to 17 years and is fully MRI-compatible. This makes it a safer and more durable option for patients requiring long-term cardiac rhythm management.
Patient Outcome
The patient responded immediately to the treatment. His heart rate stabilized to 70 beats per minute soon after the implantation. He was able to walk the next day and was discharged within 24 hours.
Regional Impact
Hospital authorities stated that this successful procedure marks a major milestone in making high-end cardiac technologies accessible within North Karnataka. It reduces the need for patients to travel to cities like Bengaluru or Mumbai for specialized care, thereby improving healthcare equity in the region.
