The Self-Employed Women's Association (SEWA) in Punjab celebrated International Domestic Workers Day on Tuesday, recognizing the struggles, identity, and rights of domestic workers as women workers. The day was observed across six districts where SEWA Punjab operates: Mohali, Moga, Ferozepur, Gurdaspur, Malerkotla, and Nabha.
Awareness Campaigns and Rallies
Ahead of June 16, SEWA domestic worker members, with support from SEWA Punjab, organized a series of awareness sessions, signature campaigns, and peaceful rallies. These activities aimed to sensitize the public, employers, and the government about the issues and challenges faced by domestic workers in the informal economy.
Key Demands
Domestic workers took a pledge to strengthen collective efforts for labour rights and social recognition. Their demands include better working conditions, fair wages, paid leaves, and dignity and respect as workers.
International Domestic Workers Day is observed annually to highlight the contributions and struggles of domestic workers worldwide. In Punjab, SEWA has been at the forefront of organizing and empowering domestic workers, many of whom are women working in precarious conditions.
Call for Action
SEWA Punjab reiterated the need for legal recognition and social security for domestic workers, who often lack basic labour protections. The organization called on the government to implement policies that ensure fair treatment and decent work for all domestic workers.
