XREAL has officially launched a new sub-brand called X By XREAL (xbx), with the primary goal of making augmented reality (AR) glasses more accessible to a broader audience. The first product under this brand is the a01, priced at $299, which will go on sale in the United States starting in July.
Exceptional Brightness and Display Technology
The standout feature of the a01 is its brightness: 1,600 nits with support for HDR10. XREAL claims this is the highest brightness level available in its category. The device utilizes dual-layer MicroOLED displays combined with a dedicated image enhancement chip to produce 1.07 billion colors. It offers a 50-degree field of view, which replicates the experience of a 147-inch screen viewed from four meters away.
Lightweight and Ergonomic Design
Weighing just 62 grams, the a01 is among the lightest AR glasses on the market. XREAL achieved this featherweight design by employing a custom ultra-light nylon body, thinner lenses, and a redesigned hinge-and-temple structure. The ergonomics are further enhanced with three interchangeable nose pad sizes and flexible temples, ensuring a comfortable fit for various users.
Spatial Anti-Shake for Commuters
One of the most practical additions is the spatial anti-shake algorithm, specifically designed for use on subways, trains, and planes. According to XREAL, most anti-shake solutions compromise sharpness for stability. In contrast, this algorithm preserves image clarity while effectively reducing motion blur, making it ideal for travelers and daily commuters.
Design Customization Options
The a01 is a 0 degrees-of-freedom device, meaning the display remains locked to the wearer's head rather than floating in space. This tradeoff simplifies the experience but limits spatial interaction. On the design front, the front frames are interchangeable, and the body is semi-transparent. XREAL is also making 3D-printable frame templates available for those who want a custom look, allowing users to personalize their glasses.
Availability and Pricing
The a01 is already available in China. The US launch is scheduled for July, with a retail price of $299. This competitive pricing positions the a01 as an entry-level option for those interested in exploring AR technology without a significant financial commitment.
