YouTube Tests AI-Powered 'Ask' Feature for Smarter Video Search
YouTube Tests AI 'Ask' Feature for Smarter Video Search

YouTube search may soon change with the power of AI. Until now, users searched for a video on YouTube by typing a few words and scrolling through thumbnails. But Google is testing a major upgrade that will allow users to use a conversational AI for searching relevant videos.

How the 'Ask' feature works

When the feature is enabled, a new button appears in the search bar or directly below a video. Instead of just delivering a list of titles, the AI can provide a “chat-like” experience with smart summaries, answers to follow-up questions, and in-video interaction.

Who can access it

The feature is currently in a “Labs” testing phase with specific requirements for entry. It is available for testing for YouTube Premium subscribers aged 18 or older. The test is live now and is scheduled to run until June 8, 2026. The tool is available in English, Hindi, Spanish, Portuguese, Korean, Arabic, Thai, Indonesian, and Japanese.

How to try it out

If you are an eligible Premium subscriber, you can opt-in via the YouTube Labs page. Once active, you can use it across several devices:

  • On mobile and web: Tap the Ask button below a video or in the search bar. Type a question or select a suggested prompt like “Summarize this video.”
  • On Smart TVs and Game Consoles: While watching, press the up or down arrow on your remote to see video details. Select the AI button to use voice input or choose a suggested prompt.

YouTube has cautioned that the tool is still learning. “AI-generated responses do not reflect the views of YouTube,” the platform noted, adding that quality and accuracy may vary during this testing period.
