A 38-year-old schoolteacher from the Raipur area has approached the Khadia police, alleging that her identity has been misused through a fake Instagram account. The account, which used her photographs, contacted others and sought personal information.
Complaint Details
According to the complaint filed on Monday, the woman, who teaches English and social science at a school near Kankaria, stated that she was alerted by a colleague on March 20 about a suspicious social media profile operating in her name. The colleague informed her that a user with a similar name had sent a friend request to her daughter and asked for her mobile number.
The complainant noted that she had not used her Instagram account for the past four years and was unaware of any such activity. After receiving a screenshot of the profile, she discovered that her photographs were being used as the display picture, confirming impersonation.
Further Inquiries
Subsequent investigations revealed that the same fake account had sent friend requests to other teachers and was engaging in conversations with them. The woman alleged that the unidentified person behind the account was sharing her photographs and attempting to misuse her identity, possibly to defame her.
She said she first approached the police earlier this month and also contacted the cybercrime helpline, where her complaint was registered. Following preliminary verification, she has now lodged a formal complaint seeking legal action.
Police Action
Police have registered a case against an unidentified person for impersonation and misuse of digital identity. Officials are analyzing technical evidence, including account details and communication records, to trace the source of the fake profile. Further investigation is underway to identify the accused and determine whether others were similarly targeted.
