Mysuru: AI Cameras Slash Traffic Violations on Bengaluru-Mysuru Highway
AI Cameras Reduce Traffic Violations on Bengaluru-Mysuru NH

In a significant development on the Bengaluru-Mysuru national highway, vehicle owners who violated traffic rules, including speed limits, owe the police a staggering Rs 121.16 crore in unpaid fines. This revelation comes as authorities implement advanced technology to curb reckless driving on this busy route.

Drastic Reduction in Violations After AI Camera Installation

Following the installation of AI-powered cameras on the national highway, the number of traffic violations has plummeted dramatically. According to data shared by Karnataka State Home Minister G Parameshwara in response to a question from Mandya MLC Madhu G Madegowda, the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) captured 13,83,861 traffic violations in 2024. The total fine amount for these infractions was Rs 93,75,42,500. However, only Rs 8,38,80,500 has been collected so far, leaving a massive Rs 85,36,62,000 unpaid.

2025 Shows Further Improvement

The positive trend continued into 2025, with traffic violations dropping sharply to 5,43,175. The corresponding fine amount was Rs 40,10,76,500, but collections remained low at just Rs 4,30,73,000. This leaves Rs 35,80,03,500 outstanding. Minister Parameshwara confirmed that 25 ITMS cameras have been strategically installed across the highway to monitor and enforce traffic regulations.

Complaints of False Violations Surface

Despite the success in reducing violations, concerns have been raised about the accuracy of the AI camera system. Madhu Madegowda highlighted that while the installation of AI cameras has led to a decrease in traffic offenses, there are growing complaints about false violations being reported.

"The AI cameras capture violations with photographic evidence. However, in many instances, even though there is no clear violation visible in the photo, vehicle owners are still slapped with fines. This issue needs urgent rectification," said Madegowda. He also pointed out that fine collection remains a significant challenge for authorities, complicating enforcement efforts.

Balancing Technology and Fair Enforcement

The implementation of AI cameras represents a major step forward in traffic management, leveraging technology to enhance road safety. The drastic reduction in violations from 2024 to 2025 underscores the deterrent effect of these systems. However, the high volume of unpaid fines and allegations of erroneous penalties highlight the need for a balanced approach.

Authorities must ensure that the AI systems are calibrated accurately to avoid penalizing innocent drivers while maintaining strict enforcement against genuine offenders. Improving the fine collection process is also crucial to maximize the effectiveness of these technological interventions.

As Mysuru and Bengaluru continue to grapple with traffic challenges on this vital national highway, the integration of AI cameras offers both promise and pitfalls. Addressing the concerns raised by officials and the public will be key to achieving safer roads and fairer enforcement in the long run.
