An artificial intelligence-based Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) with automated e-challan generation, adaptive traffic control, incident detection, and face recognition features will be installed at 700 to 800 high-risk locations across Bihar, officials announced.
Real-Time Monitoring and Enforcement
Officials said the system would enable real-time monitoring of traffic, ensure consistent enforcement of rules, and allow faster response to violations and emergencies. It will also facilitate e-way bill verification on state and national highways, in major cities, and at selected toll plazas, along with tracking vehicles transporting mining materials to strengthen regulatory oversight.
Central and District Control Centres
As part of the infrastructure, a central traffic management centre will be set up at the state level, along with observation centres in each district. Supporting systems such as software platforms, secure data hosting with disaster recovery, network connectivity, power backup, and trained manpower will also be developed.
The state transport department has identified busy intersections and accident-prone corridors on state highways and major urban roads for installation of the system. The initiative aims to improve road safety and strengthen traffic enforcement.
Project Timeline and Coordination
Officials said preparations for the project are being expedited, with a key consultation meeting scheduled for April 28 under the chairmanship of the development commissioner. The meeting will review the implementation roadmap, inter-departmental coordination, and technical requirements for statewide rollout.
Transport department secretary Raj Kumar said the ITMS will significantly improve traffic management, particularly in checking overspeeding, a major cause of road accidents. He added the department is fast-tracking the project and has taken note of recent reports highlighting road safety concerns.
Road Safety Awareness Drives
Alongside the technological measures, the department said road safety awareness drives will continue. Citizens have been urged to follow traffic rules while pedestrians have been advised to use foot overbridges and remain alert while crossing roads.
