Andhra Pradesh Announces District Cybercrime Police Stations in Major Security Overhaul
In a decisive move to combat the escalating threat of digital crimes, the Andhra Pradesh government has unveiled plans to establish dedicated cybercrime police stations across every district of the state. This initiative, announced on Saturday, forms a cornerstone of the state's budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year, signaling a robust commitment to enhancing internal security in the face of modern challenges.
Budget Highlights Focus on Modernizing Police Infrastructure
Finance Minister Payyavula Keshav, while presenting the budget, emphasized the government's determination to transform the police force through technological advancement. "Emerging digital crimes, including sophisticated online frauds and digital arrests, demand specialized infrastructure and highly trained personnel," Keshav stated. "The establishment of district-level cyber police stations will be instrumental in curbing such offenses effectively."
The cybercrime stations are part of a broader, comprehensive modernization strategy. The government will allocate 3,000 new vehicles to the police department to improve mobility and response capabilities. Furthermore, the plan includes the introduction of smart policing labs, artificial intelligence-based projects, advanced communication systems, extensive CCTV surveillance networks, and cutting-edge drone technology. These measures aim to build a fully integrated, technology-driven policing system capable of addressing contemporary security needs.
Substantial Investments in Training and Manpower
To bolster police capabilities, the budget also earmarks significant resources for training and personnel expansion. A new AP Police Academy will be constructed on a 94-acre site, with an initial allocation of Rs 15 crore this year to kickstart the project. This academy is expected to enhance the professional training of law enforcement officers.
In terms of manpower, four new Andhra Pradesh Special Police (APSP) battalions have been established in Srikakulam, Rajahmundry, Prakasam, and Chittoor districts, with 3,920 posts sanctioned to strengthen regional security. Additionally, 5,757 stipendiary cadet trainee constables have been appointed, and their monthly stipend has been substantially increased from Rs 4,500 to Rs 12,000, reflecting an effort to attract and retain talent.
Financial Support and Enhanced Benefits for Personnel
The government has released Rs 500 crore to clear pending reimbursements for travel allowance (TA), dearness allowance (DA), leave, and medical expenses, addressing long-standing financial concerns within the force. In a significant boost to welfare, the group personal accident insurance scheme for police personnel has been renewed and expanded. Coverage now offers free insurance ranging from Rs 20 lakh to Rs 45 lakh, applicable to all ranks from constables to the Director General of Police (DGP), providing enhanced financial security for officers and their families.
Specialized Units and Apps for Targeted Security
Beyond general modernization, the state is deploying specialized tools to tackle specific threats. The 'Eagle' unit is actively using drone surveillance to curb illegal marijuana cultivation, leveraging technology for precise enforcement. Meanwhile, the 'Shakti' app promises a rapid seven-minute response time to ensure women's safety, highlighting a focus on community-specific security measures.
This comprehensive budget initiative underscores Andhra Pradesh's proactive approach to policing in the digital age, combining infrastructure development, technological integration, and personnel welfare to create a more secure and resilient state.
