Belagavi Police Launch Major Investigation into Rs 15.4 Crore Cyber Fraud Case
In a significant crackdown on cybercrime, the Belagavi City Police have launched an extensive investigation targeting 390 bank accounts. This probe aims to recover approximately Rs 90 lakh that was successfully frozen after an elderly businessman was defrauded of a staggering Rs 15.4 crore in a sophisticated digital arrest scam.
Details of the Largest Single-Victim Cyber Fraud in the District
The case, officially registered on March 18 at the City Cyber, Economic and Narcotics (CEN) police station, represents the largest single-victim cyber fraud incident ever reported within the district. Despite some delay in the victim filing the formal complaint, alert investigators managed to freeze Rs 90 lakh before the fraudsters could withdraw the funds from the compromised accounts.
According to detailed police reports, the 81-year-old victim was systematically targeted by criminals posing as officials from a central government agency. Using intimidation tactics under the false pretext of a digital arrest, the fraudsters coerced the elderly man into sharing sensitive financial information. They then manipulated him into transferring enormous sums of money across multiple phases between February 7 and March 9.
Sophisticated Fraud Methodology and Financial Impact
Each fraudulent transaction ranged from Rs 1 crore to an astonishing Rs 2.5 crore. A substantial portion of the total defrauded amount originated from the victim's long-term stock market investments, which he was persuaded to liquidate under pressure from the impersonators.
Investigations have uncovered that the siphoned funds were meticulously routed through an extensive network of mule accounts spread across multiple banking institutions. Preliminary analysis suggests that the threatening calls made to the victim likely originated from Uttarakhand, pointing toward the involvement of an inter-state cybercrime network operating across regional boundaries.
Police Action and Recovery Process
Police Commissioner Bhushan Borase confirmed that all 390 identified accounts have been effectively frozen. Authorities have initiated comprehensive KYC verification procedures to trace the ultimate beneficiaries and meticulously map the complete transaction trails.
Commissioner Borase explained the legal recovery process: The victim must formally approach the court seeking reversal of the fraudulent transactions. Based on judicial direction, police will conduct thorough verification of all frozen accounts and submit a detailed investigative report. Subsequently, the court may issue orders for the transfer of funds from the seized accounts back to the victim.
Ongoing Investigations and Public Awareness Campaign
Describing the verification process as a massive administrative exercise, Commissioner Borase expressed confidence that the meticulous account verification work would be completed within approximately one week. He further revealed that police are currently investigating three additional cases with similar modus operandi, indicating a pattern of such sophisticated scams targeting vulnerable individuals.
In a crucial public appeal, the commissioner clarified a fundamental legal reality: There is absolutely no legitimate concept of digital arrest in authentic law enforcement procedures. He urgently advised citizens to immediately report any such fraudulent attempts to authorities to prevent devastating financial losses, emphasizing that prompt reporting significantly enhances recovery possibilities.
