"The panicked husband-wife duo immediately came to the police station to report the incident," stated Shashikant Chandekar, Sub-Inspector of Vashi police station. "They explained they had received notification of this substantial unauthorized transaction despite not making any purchases themselves."
How the Cyber Fraud Attempt Unfolded
Police investigation revealed that the couple had been contacted by an unknown individual posing as an Amazon representative. This fraudulent contact attempted to convince them to share mobile screenshots after opening the provided APK link.
"Our cyber crime team's initial investigation showed the couple's suspicion was justified," Chandekar explained. "They recognized the modus operandi from previous awareness about such cyber fraud techniques."
Technical Examination and Bank Verification
Forensic examination of the mobile device confirmed the APK link was indeed malicious and designed to compromise personal and financial information. Police immediately contacted the three banks where the fraudster claimed the Rs 15 lakh had been transferred.
"Technical analysis confirmed the suspicious nature of the installed APK," said Chandekar. "We verified with all concerned banks that no such transactions had actually occurred. The entire claim was fabricated to trick the victims into compromising their security."
