The Election Commission of India faced over 68 lakh malicious hits on its online platforms, including the results portal, on the counting day of the recently concluded assembly elections. These attacks originated from both within India and overseas. However, EC officials confirmed on Wednesday that all such attempts were successfully neutralized through robust cybersecurity protocols.
ECINET Platform Performance
The ECINET platform, which integrates over 40 different EC applications and portals handling various election-related functions, recorded an average of 3 crore hits per minute on counting day (May 4). On the poll days (April 9, 23, and 29), the platform registered a total of 98.3 crore hits. Since its official launch in January 2026, ECINET has seen a significant surge in usage, with 10 crore downloads to date. The beta version of ECINET was previously used in the Bihar elections in November 2025.
Role of ECINET in Elections
Commission officials stated on Wednesday that ECINET played a central role in streamlining election processes, including real-time monitoring, enabling faster reporting, and enhancing transparency during the recent polls to five states and union territories, as well as bypolls.
QR Code Security System
On counting day, over 3.2 lakh QR codes were generated to ensure that only authorized personnel could access counting venues, preventing any unauthorized entry. This new QR code-based photo identity card system was used for the first time on counting day across all five states and union territories through ECINET. It represents a significant step toward enhancing security at counting centers. The system will now become a standard for all future elections to the Lok Sabha and state or union territory assemblies.
